  1. A building sub drain is a portion of a building drain which cannot drain by gravity to the normal building drainage system. (American Society of Sanitary Engineering 2007)
  2. That portion of a drainage system that does not drain by gravity into the building sewer (WHO 2006).

Explanation

A building sub drain is constructed using the normal drainage gravity and plumbing venting principles. The sub drain which is below the inlet levels of the accepting gravity sewer or drain, is discharge to a pump system where the sewage or waste water is elevated to a point where gravity discharge can be achieved (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).

Example

A building sub drain is required where plumbing fixtures and appliances are installed below the inlet level of the public sewer connection point, or the inlet level of an onsite treatment and disposal system. A building sub drain is used to convey the waste to a pump collection point. It is then elevated by purpose made pumps to enable gravity discharge to sewer (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).
