- A building drain that conveys only domestic or industrial waste, not storm water (WHO 2006).
- A sanitary building drain sometimes referred to as a building drain is a drain intended to receive sewage and waste water but not storm water (American Association of Sanitary Engineering 2007).
Explanation
A sanitary building drain can be above ground or below ground and is a waste water discharge system graded and sized as a drain. It uses the discharge performance and venting requirements normally associated with a below ground sewerage drainage system (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).
Example
A sanitary building drain is able to carry a larger hydraulic load than a sanitary waste system while maintaining an effective performance, thus enabling greater efficiencies and flexibility in plumbing design (World Plumbing Council Working Group 2008).
